Loretta Joan Cox, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Louisville community, entered into eternal rest on May 22, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Known for her gentle kindness, radiant smile, strong faith, and generous heart, Loretta lived a life filled with grace, compassion, and quiet strength. She will be remembered as a woman who loved deeply, served humbly, and brought warmth and comfort to everyone around her.
A Life Well Lived
Loretta Joan Cox was born on November 5, 1945, in Louisville, Kentucky. She grew up in a close-knit family that taught her the values of faith, hard work, and caring for others. After graduating from Manual High School, Loretta attended the University of Louisville, where she earned a degree in Elementary Education.
She dedicated over 34 years to teaching in the Jefferson County Public Schools system, primarily as a first-grade teacher. Generations of students remembered her as the patient, encouraging educator who made learning joyful and helped every child feel seen, valued, and capable. Even after retiring in 2008, Loretta continued volunteering as a tutor and Sunday school teacher, always finding ways to nurture young minds and hearts.
In 1967, Loretta married the love of her life, Charles Edward Cox. Together they built a beautiful home and raised a family grounded in love, laughter, and Christian faith. She was a longtime active member of St. Paul United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught children’s Bible classes, and participated in women’s ministry. Loretta had a passion for gardening, baking, quilting, and spending time with her grandchildren. Her famous peach cobbler and handmade quilts were treasured gifts at family gatherings and church events.
Surviving Family Members
Loretta is survived by her devoted husband of 59 years, Charles Edward Cox of Louisville; her children: daughter Susan (Mark) Thompson of Lexington, Kentucky, and son David (Jennifer) Cox of Louisville; her cherished grandchildren: Emma, Jacob, and Abigail Thompson, and Noah, Sophia, and Benjamin Cox; and many loving siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Robert and Mary Ellen Wilson, and her sister, Patricia Wilson Hayes.
Funeral Details and Arrangements
A Celebration of Life service for Loretta Joan Cox will be held on Wednesday, May 27, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Paul United Methodist Church in Louisville, with Pastor Michael Reynolds officiating. The family will receive friends on Tuesday, May 26, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Arch L. Heady Funeral Home – Middletown.
Interment will follow at Cave Hill Cemetery. Pallbearers will include her son, son-in-law, and grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Paul United Methodist Church’s Children’s Ministry or to the Alzheimer’s Association in Loretta’s loving memory.
