Leland Verner Paschal Obituary: Remembering the Columbia, SC Resident

Leland Verner Paschal passed away on May 17, 2026, leaving behind a family and community that knew him as a man defined by steady love, quiet faith, and a lifetime of hard work. Born in Columbia on July 9, 1939, he was the son of the late Roland Otis Paschal and Maggie Lou Delk Paschal.

For much of his life, Leland worked as a carpenter, a trade that suited both his patience and his character. He believed in doing things the right way, taking pride in careful craftsmanship and honest work. Whether building something with his hands or helping someone who needed him, he approached life with consistency and purpose. Those closest to him knew that his work was never just about making a living. It was part of who he was.

More than anything, though, Leland was devoted to his family. He shared 58 years of marriage with his wife, Nancy Elrod Paschal, a partnership built on loyalty, endurance, and deep affection. Together they raised a family and created a home filled with support, humor, and lasting memories. People who knew them often saw their marriage as an example of commitment that remained steady through every season of life.

Outside of work, Leland found happiness in simple and familiar routines. He enjoyed spending time on the farm, going camping, and making trips to Mr. Williams’ peach farm, places and moments that brought him genuine peace. He appreciated life in an uncomplicated way and was happiest surrounded by family, conversation, and the outdoors.

Faith also remained an important part of his life. As a longtime member of Midway Methodist Church in Columbia, he carried his beliefs quietly but sincerely. His faith guided the way he treated people and gave him strength during difficult times.

Leland is survived by his loving wife, Nancy; his children, Jeff Paschal, Deborah Rahim (Farooq), and Angie Taylor (Eddie); his brother, Leo R. Paschal; and his sister, Ester Pearl Thigpen. He also leaves behind grandchildren Tim Paschal (Ree), Steven Paschal (Nick), Jacob Rahim (Huesna), Ismail Rahim, Kamil Rahim, Justin Moates, and Montana Holloway (Soloman), along with great-grandchildren Abby, Tyler, Aria, Grady, and Haven.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his sons, Steven Paschal and Timothy Paschal; his brother, Leon Paschal; his sister, Charlotte Lovett; and his granddaughter, Victoria Moates.

Those who knew Leland will remember a man who rarely needed attention to make an impact. He lived in a way that felt dependable and genuine, showing love more through actions than words. His family remembers his steady presence, his work ethic, and the quiet way he cared for the people around him.

Private services for Mr. Paschal will be held by the family.
