Kenneth “Ken” McSmith, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and respected member of the Chicago community, entered into eternal rest on May 21, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Known for his strong work ethic, friendly personality, quick wit, and generous heart, Ken lived a life of integrity, faith, and deep commitment to those he loved. He will be remembered as a steady, hardworking man who always put family first and treated everyone with kindness and respect.
A Life Well Lived
Kenneth James McSmith was born on October 11, 1949, in Chicago, Illinois. He grew up in a close-knit family on the city’s South Side, where he learned the values of hard work, honesty, and loyalty. After graduating from Morgan Park High School in 1967, Ken proudly served in the United States Army from 1968 to 1970. His military service shaped his character and instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty and patriotism.
Following his honorable discharge, Ken built a successful career in the transportation and logistics industry. For more than 42 years, he worked with dedication for several major Chicago companies, eventually advancing to senior operations manager. Colleagues remembered him as a fair, reliable leader who mentored many young workers and always emphasized safety, efficiency, and doing the job right. He retired in 2015 but remained active in local veterans’ groups and enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with projects.
Ken was a longtime faithful member of St. Barnabas Catholic Church, where he served as an usher and volunteered with the men’s ministry. He loved fishing on Lake Michigan, coaching his children’s baseball teams, restoring classic cars in his garage, and cheering for the Chicago Bears and Cubs. Family cookouts, weekend fishing trips, and holiday gatherings were among his greatest joys.
Surviving Family Members
Ken is survived by his loving wife of 52 years, Patricia Ann (Reynolds) McSmith of Chicago; his children: son Michael (Jennifer) McSmith of Naperville, Illinois, and daughter Sarah (Mark) Thompson of Orland Park, Illinois; his cherished grandchildren: Tyler, Madison, and Ethan McSmith, and Abigail and Jackson Thompson; and many dear siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.
He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Evelyn McSmith, and his brother, Richard McSmith.
Funeral Details and Arrangements
A Mass of Christian Burial for Kenneth “Ken” McSmith will be celebrated on Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at 10:00 AM at St. Barnabas Catholic Church in Chicago, with Father Anthony Kowalski officiating. The family will receive friends on Monday, May 25, from 4:00 PM to 8:00 PM at the Beverly Funeral Home.
Interment with military honors will follow at Holy Sepulchre Cemetery. Pallbearers will include his son, son-in-law, and grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Barnabas Catholic Church or to the Wounded Warrior Project in Ken’s honor.
