Life & Career
Born on October 18, 1947, in Roanoke, Virginia, John Pryor Savage grew up in a close-knit family that valued education, hard work, and service to others. He graduated from Jefferson High School and went on to earn a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration from Virginia Tech. Shortly after graduation, John proudly served in the United States Army, an experience that shaped his strong sense of duty and discipline.
John built a successful 40-year career in finance and banking, retiring as a Senior Vice President at SunTrust Bank (now Truist) in Richmond. Colleagues and clients respected him for his honesty, sound judgment, and genuine care for people’s financial well-being. He helped countless families achieve homeownership, plan for retirement, and build secure futures. Even after retiring in 2015, John continued to volunteer his time offering free financial literacy workshops at local community centers and churches.
A lifelong Virginian, John was deeply involved in his community. He served on the board of the Richmond Historical Society, was an active member of St. James Episcopal Church, and volunteered regularly with Habitat for Humanity. He had a passion for history, especially Civil War history, and enjoyed reading, golfing, gardening, and spending weekends at the family lake house on Lake Anna. John’s dry wit, calm presence, and willingness to listen made him a trusted advisor and cherished friend to many.
