His life was a testament to the power of kindness, hard work, and faith. Though he is no longer with us, the values he lived by and the love he shared will continue to guide and comfort his family and friends for years to come.

Life & Career

Born on March 22, 1944, in Cleveland, Ohio, George Henry Cole grew up in a close-knit family that instilled in him the importance of honesty, responsibility, and service to others. After graduating from Lincoln High School, he proudly served his country in the United States Army during the late 1960s. His years of military service shaped his strong sense of duty and discipline, qualities that defined the rest of his life.

Following his honorable discharge, George relocated to Columbus, where he built a long and successful career as a civil engineer with the Ohio Department of Transportation. For over 35 years, he contributed to major infrastructure projects that improved roads, bridges, and public safety across the state. Colleagues described him as a meticulous professional who led with quiet confidence and always put safety and quality first. He retired in 2006 but remained active as a consultant and mentor to younger engineers.

George was deeply involved in his community. He was a longtime member of Grace Community Church, where he served on the building committee and taught Sunday school for many years. He volunteered with the local chapter of Habitat for Humanity and was an active supporter of veterans’ organizations. In his free time, George enjoyed woodworking, fishing on Lake Erie, reading historical biographies, and spending summers at the family cabin in Hocking Hills.

His warm smile, dry sense of humor, and willingness to lend a helping hand made him a beloved neighbor and friend to many.

Family Members

George H. Cole is survived by his devoted wife of 56 years, Patricia Ann (née Reynolds) Cole, who stood by his side through every chapter of life with grace and love. Their marriage was a beautiful example of partnership, respect, and enduring affection.

He is lovingly remembered by his three children:

  • Robert Henry Cole (and wife Karen) of Columbus, Ohio
  • Elizabeth Marie Cole-Thompson (and husband David) of Cincinnati, Ohio
  • Thomas Edward Cole of Chicago, Illinois

George was the proud grandfather of eight grandchildren: Hannah, Matthew, Lauren, Joshua, Emma, Ryan, Sophia, and Nicholas. He cherished family gatherings, teaching his grandchildren how to fish, build birdhouses, and appreciate the simple joys of life. To them, he was “Papa George” — a steady source of wisdom, encouragement, and unconditional love.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Harold and Margaret Cole, and his younger brother, William Cole.
