Honoring the Life of Barry Jay Heber
It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Barry Jay Heber, who departed from this world on Thursday, April 30, 2026, in Woodstock, Virginia, surrounded by the quiet peace of the Shenandoah Valley. He was 67 years old.
Barry’s journey began in Chicago, Illinois, on February 27, 1959, born to his loving parents, Joseph and Dorothy Heber. Alongside his three sisters, Barry grew up in Northbrook before the family moved to Libertyville in 1968. A proud member of the local community, Barry was a 1977 graduate of Libertyville High School. He went on to pursue higher education at Northern Illinois University, graduating in 1981 with a bachelor’s degree in Business Administration. Throughout his life, Barry remained an unapologetic, fiercely loyal sports fan, always cheering on his beloved NIU Huskies, the Chicago Cubs, and the Chicago Bears through every season.
Armed with a natural gift for leadership and a sharp mind for management, Barry built a distinguished, decades-long career in the theme park and entertainment industry. He launched his professional path at Marriott’s Great America (now Six Flags Great America) in Gurnee, Illinois. His operational talent and warm management style eventually took him across the country, managing key park operations at Geauga Lake and Wyandot Lake in Ohio, Magic Springs in Arkansas, and ultimately Wild West World in Park City, Kansas. Later in his career, Barry transitioned seamlessly into Public Storage management, where his dedication to his teams earned him deep professional respect.
In 2024, Barry happily retired and relocated to Edinburg, Virginia, moving onto a beautiful farm in the Shenandoah Valley with his sister Cheryl and her husband, Tom. Barry deeply relished his retirement years, spending his days enjoying the beautiful rural landscapes, the slower pace of country life, and especially his sister’s exceptional cooking. Following a stroke in January 2026, Barry faced his recovery months with immense dignity before peacefully passing away in April.
No matter where Barry’s career or life landed him, the stories told about him are beautifully identical: he was a gentle soul, completely dedicated to his work and family, possessed a wonderfully infectious laugh, and had a rare gift for making everyone around him feel genuinely valued and deeply loved.
Barry will be sorely missed and forever remembered by his three devoted sisters, Cheryl (Tom) Kerr, Debra (David) Zare, and Donna (Tom) Buchholz. He also leaves behind a proud legacy through his many cherished nieces, nephews, extended family members, and a lifetime of wonderful friends and professional colleagues made across the country.
He was preceded in death by his father, Joseph Heber, and his mother, Dorothy Heber.
Celebration of Life Information:
True to Barry’s bright and joyful spirit, a formal Celebration of Life is currently being planned for the late summer or early autumn of 2026, where family and friends will gather to share stories, laugh, and toast to a life incredibly well-lived.
