Barbara Gayle Ward was born on August 3, 1951, in Asheville, North Carolina, to Harold and Evelyn Mitchell. Raised in a close-knit family rooted in faith and strong values, Barbara developed a deep appreciation for education, family traditions, and caring for others from an early age.
As a child, Barbara loved reading, music, gardening, and spending time with family during Sunday dinners and church gatherings. Her caring personality and calm presence naturally drew people toward her, qualities that remained with her throughout her life.
Barbara graduated from Asheville High School in 1969 before attending Appalachian State University, where she earned a degree in elementary education. She later dedicated more than thirty years of her life to teaching and mentoring young students throughout the Charlotte area.
As an educator, Barbara became known for her patience, encouragement, and ability to make every student feel valued and supported. Parents, coworkers, and former students often spoke of her kindness and the positive influence she had on countless young lives.
Barbara believed education was about more than academics—it was about building confidence, compassion, and character. Her classroom was a place where students felt safe, encouraged, and inspired to succeed.
Outside of her career, Barbara found immense joy in spending time with her family and friends. She loved hosting holiday gatherings, decorating her home for every season, and preparing homemade meals that brought loved ones together around the table.

In 1972, Barbara married Thomas Ward, the love of her life and closest companion. Together they shared fifty-four years of marriage built on faith, loyalty, mutual respect, and unconditional love. Their home became a place filled with laughter, comfort, and cherished family memories.

Barbara Gayle Ward is survived by her devoted husband, Thomas Ward; her loving children, Melissa Carter and husband Brian Carter, Jennifer Ward, and Michael Ward and wife Rebecca Ward.
She was also a proud grandmother to Emily, Nathan, Claire, Olivia, Benjamin, and Hannah, all of whom brought tremendous joy and meaning into her life. Barbara treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, whether attending school activities, baking cookies together, or sharing stories and family traditions.
She is additionally survived by her sister, Linda Hayes, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, church friends, former students, and lifelong companions who will forever cherish her memory.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Harold and Evelyn Mitchell.
To her family, Barbara was the heart of the home and the steady source of unconditional love and encouragement that carried them through every season of life.
Funeral Details
A celebration of life service honoring Barbara Gayle Ward will be held on Wednesday, May 20, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Fellowship Church in Charlotte, North Carolina. Family and friends are invited to attend visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to local educational programs or community outreach organizations in Barbara’s memory, reflecting her lifelong passion for helping children and supporting others in need.
