Walter Wayne Ezzell was born on September 2, 1947, in Montgomery, Alabama, to Raymond and Louise Ezzell. Raised in a hardworking Southern family rooted in faith and strong values, Walter learned early the importance of responsibility, humility, and dedication.
As a young man, Walter enjoyed hunting, fishing, working outdoors, and spending time with family. Friends often described him as dependable, respectful, and hardworking even during his early years.
Walter graduated from Sidney Lanier High School in 1965 before proudly serving his country in the United States Army. His military service instilled in him a deep sense of discipline, patriotism, and resilience that remained with him throughout his life.
After returning home, Walter built a respected career in the construction and transportation industries. Over more than forty years, he became known for his strong work ethic, leadership, and commitment to doing every job with excellence and integrity.
Coworkers admired Walter not only for his knowledge and dedication but also for his willingness to mentor younger employees and support those around him. He believed success came through honesty, hard work, and treating others fairly.
Outside of his career, Walter found his greatest joy in spending time with family. He loved backyard cookouts, weekend fishing trips, attending church gatherings, and supporting his children and grandchildren at school and sporting events.
Walter also enjoyed woodworking, restoring old tools, watching college football, and sitting on the porch sharing stories with family and lifelong friends. His calm wisdom and gentle humor made him someone people naturally trusted and respected.

Walter Wayne Ezzell is survived by his devoted wife, Patricia Ezzell; his loving children, Michael Ezzell and wife Rebecca Ezzell, Karen Matthews and husband David Matthews, and Steven Ezzell and wife Lauren Ezzell.
He was also a proud grandfather to Ethan, Olivia, Claire, Benjamin, Jacob, and Grace, all of whom brought tremendous joy and meaning into his life. Walter treasured every moment spent with his grandchildren, whether teaching them practical skills, attending their activities, or sharing stories and life lessons.
He is additionally survived by his brother, James Ezzell, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, church friends, former coworkers, and lifelong companions who will forever cherish his memory.
Walter was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Louise Ezzell.
To his family, Walter was far more than a husband and father—he was a protector, teacher, encourager, and constant source of unconditional love and support.
Funeral Details
A celebration of life service honoring Walter Wayne Ezzell will be held on Saturday, May 23, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Birmingham, Alabama. Family and friends are invited to attend visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Military honors will be presented following the service in recognition of Walter’s faithful service to his country.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to veterans’ organizations or local community outreach programs in Walter’s memory, reflecting his lifelong commitment to service and helping others.
