Ronald H. Schultz will be remembered as a devoted husband, proud father, cherished grandfather, and respected community member. Known for his strong work ethic, gentle humor, and unwavering faith, he lived a life of quiet integrity and deep love for those around him. His kindness and steady presence left a lasting impact on family, friends, students, and neighbors alike.
Life & Career
Born on March 15, 1944, in Des Moines, Iowa, Ronald Henry Schultz grew up on a family farm where he learned the values of hard work, honesty, and caring for others. He graduated from Roosevelt High School and went on to earn a degree in Education from Iowa State University. Ronald proudly served in the United States Army Reserve before beginning his teaching career.
For more than 38 years, Ronald served as a beloved high school teacher, coach, and later assistant principal in the Des Moines Public Schools. He taught history and coached baseball and basketball, mentoring thousands of young people. Students and colleagues remembered him as a fair, encouraging educator who believed in second chances and the power of discipline paired with compassion. Many former students credited him with shaping their character and helping them become responsible adults. He retired in 2009 but remained active in education through substitute teaching and mentoring new teachers.
Ronald was a lifelong member of Hope Lutheran Church in Des Moines, where he served as an elder, taught confirmation classes, and participated in mission projects. He enjoyed woodworking, restoring classic cars, fishing at local lakes, and cheering for the Iowa State Cyclones. His friendly demeanor, practical wisdom, and willingness to help anyone in need made him a pillar of his community and neighborhood.
Family Members
Ronald H. Schultz is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Barbara Jean (née Anderson) Schultz, who was his high school sweetheart and faithful partner through every chapter of life. Their marriage was a beautiful example of commitment, teamwork, and enduring love.
He is lovingly remembered by his four children:
- Eric Ronald Schultz (and wife Michelle) of Des Moines, Iowa
- Nicole Marie Schultz Larson (and husband Brian) of Cedar Rapids, Iowa
- Steven James Schultz (and wife Rachel) of Omaha, Nebraska
- Katherine Ann Schultz of Minneapolis, Minnesota
Ronald was the proud grandfather of 13 grandchildren and great-grandfather to two. He cherished family camping trips, backyard barbecues, holiday gatherings, and coaching his grandchildren in sports. Known affectionately as “Papa Ron,” he was a steady source of guidance, encouragement, and unconditional love. His grandchildren will always remember his stories, his laughter, and the way he made everyone feel important.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Henry and Margaret Schultz, and his older brother, Richard Schultz.
Funeral Details
A Celebration of Life service for Ronald H. Schultz will be held on Saturday, May 30, 2026, at 11:00 AM at Hope Lutheran Church, 3425 East 9th Street, Des Moines, Iowa. Visitation will take place one hour prior to the service.
Interment will follow at Glendale Cemetery with military honors. In lieu of flowers, the family requests that memorial contributions be made to Hope Lutheran Church or the Iowa State University Scholarship Fund, in honor of Ronald’s lifelong dedication to faith and education.
