Michael Olaf Schmitz Obituary
Richfield – age 27, of Richfield, passed away on Friday, May 1, 2026.
Michael was born on May 4th, 1998, in Edina to Kristine Matson and Jeffrey Schmitz. He grew up in Eden Prairie and graduated from Hopkins High School and University of Wisconsin-Stout. He went on to work as an Area Leader for Speedway, where he was known for his hard work, kindness, and leadership.
He was a devoted fiancé, son, brother and friend who loved cooking, hosting events, tennis, golf, boating, fishing, the State Fair, going on walks with his dog Mabel and fiancé Chandra, and being adventurous in traveling with family and friends. Those who knew him will remember his unmatched energy, leadership, faith, generosity, goofy humor, patience, courage, charisma, and his natural ability to bring people together and make them feel like family.
He is survived by his fiancé, Chandra Wigfield; his parents, Kristine Matson and Jeffrey Schmitz; his brother and sister-in-law, Thomas and Abigail Schmitz and his stepparents, Gary Matson and Becca Schmitz. He was preceded in death by his grandparents, Olaf and Janet Nielsen; and Norman and Jacqueline Schmitz.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests contributions, which will be directed to causes that were meaningful to Michael at a later time.
A visitation will be held on Thursday, May 21st, 2026, at 10am, at Christ Presbyterian Church, 6901 Normandale Rd. in Edina followed by a funeral service at 11am and lunch.
Michael will be deeply missed and forever remembered by all who knew and loved him.
