She touched countless lives through her compassion, wisdom, and dedication to family and friends.
A Life Well Lived
Joyce Marie Whitacre was born on February 14, 1945, in Columbus, Ohio. She grew up in a loving family on the city’s north side, where she learned the values of faith, hard work, and caring for others. After graduating from Northland High School, Joyce attended The Ohio State University, earning a degree in Elementary Education.
She dedicated more than 36 years to teaching in the Columbus City Schools system, primarily as a beloved kindergarten and first-grade teacher. Generations of students remembered her as the patient, joyful educator who made learning fun and helped every child feel safe, valued, and capable. Even after retiring in 2007, Joyce continued volunteering as a tutor and Sunday school teacher, always finding ways to nurture young hearts and minds.
In 1967, Joyce married the love of her life, Robert “Bob” Whitacre. Together they built a beautiful home and raised a family grounded in love, laughter, and strong Christian values. She was a longtime active member of Worthington United Methodist Church, where she sang in the choir, taught children’s Bible classes, and participated in women’s ministry. Joyce had a passion for gardening, baking, quilting, and spending time at the family cabin on Buckeye Lake. Her famous apple pie and homemade cinnamon rolls were always anticipated at family gatherings and church potlucks.
