Jane Nelson MacKinnon, 84, of Portland, Maine, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, April 28, 2026.
Jane Nelson MacKinnon, a beloved wife, mother, grandmother, and cherished member of the Portland community, entered into eternal rest on April 28, 2026, surrounded by her loving family. Known for her gentle grace, warm smile, sharp intellect, and deep compassion, Jane lived a life rich in faith, family, and quiet acts of kindness. She will be remembered as a woman who touched countless lives with her wisdom, generosity, and unwavering love.
A Life Well Lived
Jane Nelson MacKinnon was born on June 15, 1941, in Portland, Maine. She grew up in a close-knit Scottish-American family that instilled in her strong values of faith, education, and service to others. After graduating from Deering High School, Jane attended the University of Maine, where she earned a degree in Education.
She dedicated more than 35 years to teaching English and Literature at Portland High School, inspiring generations of students with her passion for learning and her ability to connect with young people. Former students often described her as the teacher who made literature come alive and who offered guidance and encouragement that extended far beyond the classroom. She retired in 2003 but remained active in education through volunteer tutoring and literacy programs.
In 1964, Jane married the love of her life, Robert James MacKinnon. Together they built a beautiful home filled with love, laughter, books, and strong family traditions. She was a longtime active member of St. Luke’s Episcopal Cathedral, where she sang in the choir, taught Sunday school, and participated in outreach ministries. Jane had a passion for gardening, reading classic literature, knitting, and spending summers at the family cottage on Sebago Lake. Her Scottish shortbread and homemade jams were legendary at family gatherings and church events.
Surviving Family Members
Jane is survived by her devoted husband of 62 years, Robert James MacKinnon of Portland; her children: daughter Elizabeth (Mark) Thompson of Boston, Massachusetts, and son Andrew (Sarah) MacKinnon of Portland; her cherished grandchildren: Emma, Jacob, and Olivia Thompson, and Noah and Sophia MacKinnon; and many loving siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and dear friends.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Thomas and Margaret Nelson, and her sister, Patricia Nelson Hayes.
Funeral Details and Arrangements
A Celebration of Life service for Jane Nelson MacKinnon will be held on Saturday, May 9, 2026, at 11:00 AM at St. Luke’s Episcopal Cathedral in Portland, with Reverend Thomas Whitaker officiating. The family will receive friends on Friday, May 8, from 4:00 PM to 7:00 PM at the Conroy-Tully Funeral Home.
Interment will follow at Evergreen Cemetery in Portland. Pallbearers will include her son, son-in-law, and grandsons.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial contributions be made to St. Luke’s Episcopal Cathedral or to the Maine Literacy Project in Jane’s loving memory.
