BRUNSWICK – Frederick Vincent Koerber Jr. passed away on Thursday, May 7, 2026. He was born on October 29, 1946, the son of Frederick Vincent Sr. and Iva Giles Koerber.
He will be remembered as a dedicated educator, respected basketball coach, historian, and community advocate whose life deeply influenced generations of students in Brunswick, Maine.
Early Life and Education
Fred graduated from Brunswick High School in 1966 and later earned his Bachelor’s degree in Education from Gorham State College in 1970.
On June 7, 1969, he married his high school sweetheart and lifelong partner, Kathy Fox. He later continued his education, earning a Master’s degree in Technology from Leslie College in Boston.
From an early age, Fred demonstrated a strong commitment to learning, teaching, and leadership.
Teaching Career and Impact on Students
Fred began his teaching career in 1970 at Brunswick Junior High School, where he taught history and archaeology and also coached basketball.
After 25 years, he transitioned to Brunswick High School, continuing both teaching and coaching. Over a 38-year career in education, Fred became known for his passion, discipline, and ability to challenge students to reach their full potential.
He formed lasting relationships with many students, several of whom remained lifelong friends.
His influence extended far beyond the classroom, shaping both academic and personal growth for generations of learners.
Coaching Legacy in Basketball
Fred was a pioneering coach who played a key role in developing equitable opportunities between boys’ and girls’ basketball programs at Brunswick Junior High School.
He later coached at Brunswick High School, mentoring standout athletes including Rita O’Connor Maines and Joanne Palumbo McCallie, the first female athlete from Maine to be named a Parade All-American.
During his tenure coaching girls’ basketball, his teams made six tournament appearances in seven seasons.
He later returned to Brunswick Junior High before serving more than a decade as assistant coach under Todd Hanson. In 2002, Brunswick High School captured the Class A State Championship.
Fred’s coaching legacy is remembered for leadership, mentorship, and dedication to student-athletes.
Community Involvement and Interests
Beyond education and coaching, Fred was deeply involved in his community.
He served on several public committees, including:
- Brunswick Recreation and Open Space Task Force
- Comprehensive Planning Committee
He was also a member of the Merry Meeting Pioneer Project and the Maine Archaeological Society, and served as a board member of the Pejepscot Historical Society and the Brunswick-Topsham Land Trust.
Fred had a strong love for the ocean, woodworking, history, and environmental preservation.
He also enjoyed traveling with his wife Kathy, especially memorable trips to the Caribbean and Ireland with family.

Fred is survived by his wife, Kathy; his son Kyle and daughter-in-law Sarah; his son Kristofer and daughter-in-law Cait; and his grandchildren Iva and Eli.
He is remembered as a devoted husband, father, grandfather, educator, and mentor.
