Walter Ellis Miller Obituary May 22, 2026 | Indianapolis, IN

Walter Ellis Miller, 82, of Indianapolis, Indiana, passed away peacefully on Friday, May 22, 2026.

Walter Ellis Miller, a devoted husband, loving father, proud grandfather, and respected member of the Indianapolis community, entered into eternal rest on May 22, 2026, surrounded by his loving family. Known for his strong character, gentle humor, unwavering integrity, and generous spirit, Walter lived a life of purpose, faith, and quiet leadership. He will be remembered as a man who worked hard, loved deeply, and always showed up for the people who mattered most.

A Life Well Lived

Walter Ellis Miller was born on March 15, 1944, in Indianapolis, Indiana. Raised in a hardworking family on the city’s east side, he learned early the values of honesty, perseverance, and responsibility. After graduating from Arsenal Technical High School in 1962, Walter proudly served in the United States Navy from 1963 to 1967. His years of service instilled in him a lifelong sense of duty and patriotism.

Following his honorable discharge, Walter built a successful career in the automotive industry. For more than 40 years, he worked with dedication at several major Indianapolis companies, eventually advancing to senior plant supervisor. Colleagues remembered him as a fair, knowledgeable leader who mentored many young workers and always emphasized quality, safety, and doing things the right way. He retired in 2009 but remained active in local trade associations and enjoyed helping friends and neighbors with vehicle repairs and home projects.

Walter was a longtime faithful member of Eastside Christian Church, where he served as a deacon and volunteered with the men’s ministry. He loved fishing at Geist Reservoir, coaching his children’s baseball teams, restoring classic cars in his garage, and cheering for the Indianapolis Colts and Indiana Hoosiers. Family camping trips, weekend barbecues, and holiday gatherings were among the highlights of his life. He took great pride in teaching his children and grandchildren practical skills and the importance of faith and family values.

Surviving Family Members

Walter is survived by his loving wife of 57 years, Patricia Ann (Reynolds) Miller of Indianapolis; his children: son Michael (Jennifer) Miller of Carmel, Indiana, and daughter Sarah (Mark) Thompson of Fishers, Indiana; his cherished grandchildren: Tyler, Madison, and Ethan Miller, and Abigail and Jackson Thompson; and many dear siblings, nieces, nephews, cousins, and lifelong friends.

He was preceded in death by his parents, James and Evelyn Miller, and his brother, Richard Miller.

A Heartfelt Tribute

Walter Ellis Miller was a man of quiet strength and steadfast love. He never sought recognition or praise, yet his steady presence was the foundation his family and community depended upon. As a husband, he was loyal and supportive. As a father and grandfather, he was patient, encouraging, and always ready with a helpful hand or a piece of wise advice. He taught those around him the value of hard work, keeping your word, and treating others with respect.

From his years of service in the Navy to building a successful career and raising a loving family, Walter lived with purpose and integrity. His calm demeanor, gentle humor, and strong hugs brought comfort and joy to those around him. He cherished his marriage to Patricia, his Christian faith, and the simple joys of life — morning coffee on the porch, time with his grandchildren, and watching the sunset after a long day.

Though our hearts are heavy with grief, we find comfort knowing Walter has gone home to his Heavenly Father, reunited with loved ones who preceded him. His legacy of faith, family, and faithful service will continue to guide and inspire his loved ones for generations to come.
