Celebrating the Life of Russell “Buzz” Elliott Hall

It is with heavy hearts that we announce the passing of Russell Elliott Hall—known affectionately to everyone as “Buzz”—who left us peacefully on May 17, 2026. After a courageous and lengthy battle with heart issues and bladder cancer, Buzz faced his final days with the same quiet strength and stubborn optimism that defined his entire life.

Born on January 20, 1948, in Rockford, Illinois, Buzz was the cherished son of Russell Erwin Hall and Maxine Hall (Shook). Growing up in the Rockford area, he developed a lifelong love for local sports and the outdoors. Shortly after his youth, Buzz answered the call of duty and proudly enlisted in the United States Army. Serving as an E5 Sergeant Medic in the legendary 101st Airborne from October 1967 to May 1969, he walked through the fires of the Vietnam era with a caregiver’s heart, a chapter of his life that remained a profound source of quiet pride.

Upon returning home to Illinois, Buzz channeled his disciplined work ethic into his community. He dedicated 30 loyal years to the Testor Corporation in Rockford, followed by dedicated years at Anderson Packaging. Even in retirement, Buzz couldn’t quite sit still; he spent his final years enjoying the camaraderie of a part-time security position, simply loving the opportunity to cross paths with people every day.

Though his formal titles were Sergeant and Machinist, his favorite titles were always Son, Brother, Husband, Father, Pawpaw, and Friend. He shared a meaningful chapter of life and raised a family with his ex-wife, Gayle Treend, and together they brought three proud sons into the world. Buzz was a constant fixture in his boys’ lives, transitioning later into the role of a doting, fun-loving Pawpaw to his four granddaughters.

Buzz lived life through color and action. He was an avid golfer, a passionate fisherman, and a fierce competitor in local fast-pitch softball leagues. If a game was on television, Buzz was watching it. Yet, above all sports, his absolute favorite pastime in recent years was attending his regularly scheduled “board meetings”—the long, laughter-filled coffee hours and catch-ups spent around tables with his closest friends.

Buzz’s legacy of kindness, open-handed generosity, and easygoing spirit lives on through his family. He is survived by his three sons, Michael (Lisa) Hall, Matthew (Deborah) Hall, and Kyle Hall; his ex-wife and lifelong family connection, Gayle Treend; his sister, Sue Marin; his niece, Stephanie Lentz; his nephew, Ray Bowers; and the absolute lights of his life, his granddaughters: Taylor, Mackenzie, Madison, and Brooklyn Hall. He is also survived by his extended family, Roger and Connie Ruden, along with a tight-knit circle of lifelong friends.

He was greeted in eternity by those who went before him: his father, Russell Erwin Hall; his mother, Maxine Hall; his sister, Norma Kirkland; and his nephew, Tom Bowers.

The Hall family wishes to extend their deepest, most heartfelt gratitude to the medical staff at the William S. Middleton Memorial Veterans’ Hospital. Their exceptional care, unyielding dignity, and profound concern comforted Buzz and his family all the way to his final moments.
