Genaro Martinez Vergara, 74, of El Paso, Texas, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, May 19, 2026.
Genaro Martinez Vergara was a beloved husband, father, grandfather, and respected member of the El Paso community. Known for his strong work ethic, warm smile, generous spirit, and deep love for family, Genaro lived a life filled with humility, faith, and dedication to those he loved. His presence brought comfort and joy to everyone around him.
A Life Well Lived
Genaro Martinez Vergara was born on November 12, 1951, in Ciudad Juárez, Mexico, and moved to El Paso, Texas, as a young boy with his family. He grew up bridging two cultures and took great pride in his Mexican heritage while embracing life in the United States. After graduating from Bowie High School, Genaro attended El Paso Community College and began a long and successful career in the construction and civil engineering field.
For more than 45 years, Genaro worked with dedication, eventually becoming a project supervisor for major infrastructure developments across West Texas and Southern New Mexico. Colleagues remembered him as a fair, hardworking leader who mentored many young workers and always emphasized doing the job right with honesty and integrity. He took special pride in helping build schools, roads, and community facilities that would serve future generations.
Genaro was a longtime active member of Sacred Heart Catholic Church, where he served as a lector, volunteered with the Knights of Columbus, and participated in numerous outreach programs helping immigrant families and the needy. He enjoyed spending time in his garden, listening to traditional Mexican music, grilling carne asada for family gatherings, and watching soccer with his grandchildren. His annual trips back to Mexico to visit relatives kept family traditions strong across generations.

Genaro is survived by his loving wife of 49 years, Maria Elena (Ramirez) Martinez Vergara of El Paso; his children: son Alejandro (Sophia) Martinez of Austin, Texas, daughter Isabella (Carlos) Rivera of El Paso, and son Daniel (Laura) Martinez Vergara of Las Cruces, New Mexico; his cherished grandchildren: Mateo, Sofia, Lucas, Camila, and Diego; and many brothers, sisters, nieces, nephews, cousins, and extended family members in both the United States and Mexico.

A Heartfelt Tribute
Genaro Martinez Vergara was the cornerstone of his family and a quiet hero to many. He worked hard not for recognition, but to provide a better life for his wife, children, and grandchildren. With calloused hands and a tender heart, he showed what it means to love through actions — building not just structures, but a legacy of faith, resilience, and family unity.
He taught his children the value of education, the importance of staying close to God and family, and the beauty of honoring one’s roots while working toward a brighter future. His grandchildren will always remember Grandpa Genaro’s stories, his infectious laugh, the way he made the best tamales, and how safe and loved they felt in his presence.
Though our hearts ache with his passing, we find peace knowing Genaro has gone home to his Heavenly Father, reunited with loved ones who went before him. His spirit of love, strength, and faith will continue to guide and inspire his family for generations to come.
