Harvey Richard “Dick” Steinmetz, age 84, of Yakima, Washington, passed away on May 7, 2026, at home with his devoted and loving wife by his side after a long struggle with lung and heart conditions.
He will be remembered as a hardworking businessman, lifelong farmer at heart, and deeply caring family man who built lasting relationships with everyone he met. Known for his generosity, leadership, and warm personality, Dick lived a life rooted in service, family, and community.
Early Life and Farming Roots
Dick Steinmetz was born on June 24, 1941, in Toppenish, Washington, to Alex and Kathryn Steinmetz.
In his own words, he often reflected that working alongside his father on the family farm was the most meaningful part of his early life. Those years shaped his strong work ethic and deep appreciation for honest labor.
He began working independently at just 14 years old and went on to hold multiple jobs that built the foundation of his lifelong career.
Career in Hardware Business
In 1960, Dick began his long career in the hardware industry, a field he would dedicate most of his life to.
From 1974 to 1986, he served as Sales Manager for Yakima Hardware Company, where he became known for his leadership, reliability, and strong relationships with customers and staff.
In 1988, he opened Stein’s Pro Hardware in Meadowbrook Mall, turning his vision into a successful local business. Over time, the store expanded and became known as Stein’s Ace Hardware, a respected name in the Yakima community.
In 2009, he expanded the business further and eventually transitioned leadership to Brad Cunningham before fully selling the business in 2016.
Dick often expressed gratitude for his loyal employees and long-time customers, whom he considered an extension of his family.
Family, Care, and Personal Life
Dick was known for having a big heart and never meeting a stranger. He was a deeply caring husband, father, grandfather, and great-grandfather.
One of the most defining examples of his love came in 2018, when he devoted himself to caring for his daughter Tracy after her stroke, remaining by her side with patience and strength.
His greatest joy in life came from time spent with his family, especially during RV travels, cruises, trips to Puerto Vallarta, and peaceful moments at the family cabin.
He valued togetherness above everything else.
Family Left to Cherish His Memory
Dick is survived by his wife Beverly; his sister Linda Robinson; his daughters Dorothy and Tracy; and his grandchildren Marisa and Joanna. He is also survived by great-granddaughter Danae (Beto) Esquivel, grandsons Russell and Rowan, son-in-law Paul Engel (Sarah), sister-in-law Teresa Sjule (David), and many nieces and nephews who loved him dearly.
He was preceded in death by his parents Alex and Kathryn Steinmetz; his brother Don Steinmetz; his sister Dolly Hylar; and the mother of his daughters, Jo Ann Taft, as well as brother-in-law Gayle Brewer.

A celebration of life will be held on June 17, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Keith & Keith Funeral Home, 902 West Yakima Avenue, Yakima, Washington.
