Life & Career
Carol Ann Herndon was born on June 11, 1949, in Lexington, Kentucky, to William and Dorothy Mitchell. Raised in a loving family that valued education, honesty, and faith, Carol developed a deep appreciation for family traditions and community service from an early age.
As a young girl, Carol enjoyed reading, singing in church choir, and spending time outdoors with family and friends. Her caring personality and gentle heart became defining qualities that remained with her throughout her life.
Carol graduated from Lafayette High School in 1967 before attending the University of Kentucky, where she studied education. Following graduation, she pursued a rewarding career as an elementary school teacher, dedicating more than three decades to helping children learn and grow.
Students, parents, and fellow educators admired Carol for her patience, encouragement, and ability to make every child feel valued. She believed education was not only about academics but also about kindness, confidence, and helping children discover their potential.
Outside of her professional life, Carol’s greatest joy came from spending time with family. She loved hosting holiday dinners, baking homemade desserts, decorating for every season, and creating traditions that brought loved ones together year after year.
Carol also enjoyed gardening, quilting, reading devotional books, and volunteering through church and local outreach programs. She appreciated life’s quiet moments and found happiness in caring for others.
A devoted member of her church community, Carol participated in women’s ministries, food drives, charity events, and youth programs throughout the years. She quietly supported families in need and often gave her time and energy without expecting recognition.
In 1971, Carol married James Herndon, beginning a loving marriage built on faith, partnership, and unconditional support. Together they shared more than fifty years of cherished memories filled with laughter, love, and family milestones.

Carol Herndon is survived by her devoted husband, James Herndon; her loving children, Melissa Carter and husband Daniel Carter, Rebecca Herndon, and Matthew Herndon and wife Lauren Herndon.
She was also a proud grandmother to Olivia, Ethan, Claire, Benjamin, Grace, and Hannah, all of whom brought tremendous joy and purpose into her life. Carol treasured every moment spent with her grandchildren, whether attending school events, baking together, or sharing stories and family traditions.
She is additionally survived by her sister, Linda Mitchell Harper, along with several nieces, nephews, cousins, church friends, former students, and lifelong companions who will forever cherish her memory.
Carol was preceded in death by her parents, William and Dorothy Mitchell.
To her family, Carol was the heart of the home—a source of unconditional love, encouragement, and strength whose presence brought comfort and stability to every stage of life.
Funeral Details
A celebration of life service honoring Carol Herndon will be held on Saturday, May 24, 2026, at 11:00 a.m. at Grace Community Church in Lexington, Kentucky. Family and friends are invited to attend visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m. prior to the service.
Burial will follow at Evergreen Memorial Gardens.
The family kindly requests that memorial donations be made to local educational charities or community food outreach programs in Carol’s memory, reflecting her lifelong passion for helping children and supporting those in need.
