Manuel ‘Norm’ Norman Chavez Obituary: Our Lady of Sorrows Service Details

Manuel Norman Chavez, known as “Norm,” was born in Santa Barbara on November 23, 1940, and passed away peacefully in his hometown on May 5, 2026, at the age of 85.

He was the beloved son of Manuel Chavez, Sr., and was raised by his mother, Kathleen F. Ruiz, and her husband, Everett M. Ruiz. Norm lived a full and grounded life centered on family, hard work, and community.

Norm was a devoted father, brother, grandfather, uncle, and friend. He is survived by his children, Manny, Cammie, and Rachel; his brother Larry “Buddy”; his sister Kathy “Skunky”; and his six grandchildren who brought him great joy. He was preceded in death by his father, Manuel Chavez, Sr., and his mother, Kathleen Ruiz.

Norm grew up in Santa Barbara and attended Dolores School and Catholic High School before graduating from Santa Barbara High School. He later served proudly in the United States Marine Corps, an experience that shaped his discipline, strength, and sense of responsibility.

After his service, Norm worked for more than 40 years as a plasterer throughout Santa Barbara County. He took pride in his work, known for being dependable, skilled, and always willing to show up when people needed him.

Beyond his career, Norm was known for his steady personality and warm presence. He had a calm and easygoing nature, a sharp sense of humor, and a generous spirit. He was someone who made people feel comfortable right away and was always willing to help without hesitation.

Norm valued connection deeply. He was a familiar and friendly presence at school events, community gatherings, and family activities. He often supported his daughter Rachel’s friends, volunteered at Notre Dame School, and made a point of attending sporting events and community functions whenever he could.

He was also known for his long-standing commitment to sobriety, celebrating 38 years on November 3, 2025. Norm was a devoted friend of Bill W., and the fellowship and friendships he built there played an important role in his life.

In his personal time, Norm enjoyed simple pleasures. He loved a good cup of coffee, sweet treats shared with his daughter Rachel, watching sports, and spending time at local spots like Denny’s, where he was well known and always welcomed warmly. He was also a faithful parishioner at Our Lady of Sorrows Church, attending services regularly.

More than anything, Norm will be remembered for his consistency—his ability to show up, support others, and make people feel seen and valued. His life reflected service, humility, humor, and quiet strength.

A funeral service will be held on Friday, June 26, 2026, at 10:00 a.m. at Our Lady of Sorrows Church. A celebration of life will follow at 12:00 p.m. at Oak Park in Santa Barbara.
