Billy Dean Thomas Obituary | May 9, 2026
Mr. Billy Dean Thomas, age 88, of Murrayville passed away May 9, 2026, at his home. He was born October 8, 1938, to Hoke C. And Clara Purcell Thomas in Commerce Georgia. He attended Commerce High School and Enjoyed playing football for the Commerce Tigers. He was hired in 1963 by Georgia Power Company to work in Madison, Georgia. He worked his way up to line foreman, moving between Gainesville and Toccoa. During his time with Georgia Power, he and his crews were sent to help restore power to four major hurricanes, Camille in 1969, Frederick in 1979, Hugo in 1989 and Andrew in 1992. He retires in 1994 after 31 years with the Company. He always believed in being the best at what you do.
After retirement he enjoyed his grandchildren and family, fishing, watching the North Hall Trojans, working in his yard, and growing his gardens. For many years he sold vegetables and many tomatoes at the Hall County Farmers Market.
He was preceded in death by his parents and sisters, Mary Fricks and Lois Bridges of Commerce. He is survived by his wife of 71 years, Latrelle Benton Thomas, son Danny (Pam) Thomas of Lula, daughter, Janet (Richard) Lathem of Murrayville and a brother, Joe (Shirley) Thomas of Commerce. Five grandchildren Joshua (Lisa) Lathem, Gainesville, Steven (Mary Alice) Lathem, Daniel Island, South Carolina, Terry Lathem, Daniel Island, South Carolina, Dani Beth (Jeremy) Little, Hoschton, Andy (Chloe) Thomas, Lula. Also, eight great grandchildren, Bree (David) Pollard, Callie Lathem (fiancé Cody Lane), Emily Brooks Lathem, Mary Benton Lathem, Tanner Little, Luca, Rhea and Lennox Thomas. One great-granddaughter, Brinley Pollard, and a step great-great granddaughter Sarah Pollard plus many nephews, nieces, and cousins.
